Find marginalia

If you know the title of the work you are looking for, or its date, this page will get you there quickly.

Voltaire’s personal library contains thousands of handwritten marks and notes in his hand or those of his secretaries, as well as inserted paper markers (signets), many of which also bear notes. These marginalia are revealing about what he thought of a given work or its author and tell us much about how he used what he read as raw material for his own writings.

Browse the list of works below, or start typing in the box to find marginalia relating to a specific title or author. You can use any word from the title, from the beginning, middle or end.

The list can be sorted alphabetically (from A to Z or from Z to A) by either author or title, by clicking on each column heading.
